Implicit understanding

Although somewhere some local government has a little bit of their own traffic codes, it is almost all the same codes in the same country. It must be the same but we can see differences when we go to other places. We have some implicit understanding between local people even though we have explicit traffic codes.

Before I had a chance to live in Fukuoka, Westside of Japan, I noticed that they have road etiquettes which differ from what I knew before. They never stop when the signal is at the end of yellow or the beginning of red. 50cc motorcycle riders drive inner side of the road when they make a right turn (same as left turn in the US or many other countries). They should drive outer side of the road and make a large turn. Actually, it’s a law (furthermore, they should make right turns the two-step way like pedestrians), but nobody obeys these rules and doing so seems to be their implicit understanding.

These kind of things are not only in Japan. In the US, I can recognize another thing. California people may stop when they can recognize pedestrians (I know only Bay Area, though), Chicago people never stop for pedestrians (same as Japan and Korea). Under the law, we should stop when we see them on the crosswalk, but their action depends on where they live. It seems like they have another set of road etiquettes implicitly. So, we have to know how people behave on the road when we go to new places.

I would say it is like a local custom which is beyond the law. Although we should not follow this kind of local custom which is actually illegal, sometime I have no choice but to obey it because some people pressure me using their horns, saying something like “Hey, what are you doing!? Get your ass moving!”

I’m curious who made this kind of etiquette? I know it is caused by something like the “invisible hand.”

Are you sure? Why are you waiting at the right-side of me?? You are supposed to be left-side!!

Is Doraemon junkie?

Recently I’ve borrowed a graphic novel titled “Doraemon” (It is written in English). Main character named Doraemon is from future and he is robot. He comes to the present time because Nobita-kun is like an idiot boy and Doraemon wants to help him. Doraemon has four-dimensional pocket on his stomach and many tools in there (I don’t know why pocket is four-dimentional) and helps Nobita-kun using those tools.

Doraemon also has many medical stuff to solve a problem. For instance, Nobita-kun is very drone person and he gets into trouble because of his character. So, Doraemon takes out two medicines named “Quick” and “Slow” has the opposite effect.

When I returned this comic to my friend, he read a little and told me, Doraemon has a lot of medical stuffs and he looks like a junkie.
“Quick” sounds like “Speed”!
When I read this comic, I didn’t think like that.
Umm, interesting point of view!

By the way, he learns Japanese from Doraemon!!
I’ve borrowed Doraemon from American friend.
Is it weird?

Come on, Doraemon! You must be junkie!!

The discrepancy between the vibe of the music and its lyrics

I’m not a professional DJ, but I do know a bit of DJing. One of the things that a DJ does is mixing a song into the next song like creating a story tale. The most important thing is the flow of songs and DJs have to know which songs have what kind of atmospheres because the connection between songs should like a smooth musical story. So, DJs have to be able to feel the mood of the song. I try to feel the song and categorize them. It is not always concrete, though. And DJs mix from song to song which have similar vibes.

Sorry for having such a long preamble, what I want to say is I can recognize the difference between my feelings about a song’s vibe and its theme of lyrics these days. Before my policy of listening music is just feeling the sounds. I didn’t care about what the musician is singing and vocal is one of the instruments for me. But nowadays I try to understand what they are singing about and this discrepancy problem comes out. For instance, there was a song that I could feel a positive vibe, but the lyric was negative. I stand up against this problem and try to seek of a way to solve it. I’m not sure but one of the solutions is that I have to listen to the sounds and lyric simultaneously before I get some image of songs.

Do you have the same experience which you can feel the discrepancy?

Is losing weight difficult!?

Fortunately, I have a gift which my body is not gain weight easiry. And I have heard that many people who live in another country can easily gain weight because of their eating habit. But this does not apply on me because although I am living another country, I eat Japanese food almost all day. I can buy Japanese food and I try to cook myself.

However, I have a problem. I cook too much and I eat everything. It means I got some weight. I can't look at my stomach. It looks like it is not mine. So, I decided to exercise twice a week. I joined masters swimming team. Every time I would swim about 4,000 yards (3,800m). When I first started to swim, I couldn't swim well and I felt like my body was not mine. My feeling and my movement were totally different. But as time goes by, I can handle all of the swimming exercises as planned.

In my opinion, our body is like a balance. We can only do things like deposit and withdraw, eat and use energy (Elimination is also an output). I guess it is easy to think about it as our body weight. Fat is the balance. If you want to lose weight, you should withdraw a lot of amount. Of course we have to think about our basal metabolism and it also depends on person, we can get energy only from eating. If we want to lose our weight, we have two choices. Don't eat too much or exercise a lot. That's why I choose to exercise and I go to the pool twice a week.

Recently I can recognize my changing. I wnat to eat more. Many times I feel so hungry and I eat more than before. Oh! I deposit a lot more than before! What's going to happen to my balance? Do I need more exercise?

Conversations are like surfing.

Have you ever surfed or seen surfing? If you go to some beaches, you can see many surfers on the surface of the sea as they wait for a good wave. They have a rule which is one wave one person. But everyone wants to get a good wave, so many times they compete to get it. Conversations are like surfing. Only one person can speak while the other person listens to him/her and wait for their chance to speak. Whether it's one on one conversation or many people, only one person can speak at a time. Otherwise conversation doesn't come into effect. Good surfers have good eyes. I mean they can recognize which wave will be better to surf. If you decide that this wave is good in front of the wave, it's too late. The wave leaves you. Conversation also asks us to recognize where the story will go, or else we can't follow the subject.

When I was in Japan, I wanted to be a good conversation surfer and before I went to pub or Izakaya, I swore to myself that I should listen to other people's opinions and try to recognize what the subject is. I mean when I drink a lot, I can't control myself and I speak too much. Because of my promise, I would say I could have a good time there and I could catch a good wave!

Now, the situation is a little bit different. I can't ride the wave! One on one talking is OK, but when I was in a group, it was difficult for me to find a good wave. I mean, one time many people were talking about some issue and it was difficult for me to guess where the subject would go. As for one on one talking, the half topic is mine but group talking is not. In addition, if I have my opinion and want to say it, I need several minutes to organize in English before I speak. But when I have prepared to speak, everyone is already on another topic. Oh! Where is my wave? Wait!

My situation is just like a floating surfer on the sea. I always wait for my wave and try to catch it, but the wave leaves me. I want to ride the wave called conversation like a professional surfer.

I wanna ride on the wave. Where is my wave??

Do you have a talent for drawing?

I would say many people have a talent for drawing because they drew a lot when they were kids. I guess as we grow, we don't draw pictures as much and we lose our talent for drawing or forget how to draw bit by bit. Maybe I shouldn't use the word "talent", but anyway, as for me, I'm poor at drowing pictures from the images in my mind. I can't express myself through drawing. For instance, I talk with friend about cars, but I can't draw a car well. It is like a child's drawing and I am so embarrasssed. My drawings end up totally different then from what I imagined. When I was kid, I guess I could draw something from my mind. However, now I have no idea how to draw from my imagination.

I wonder why we quit drawing as we grow? When we were young, we drew a lot though. As we grow, we lose our ablity to draw, but what kind of skill do we get in it's place?

I'm not good at small talking.

I'm not good at small talking.
First reason is that I'm shy and I don't know what I can talk to someone about. I would say many American people are good at small talking and I'm curious what kind of topics they talk about. Especially, first time I meet someone, I have no idea what is a common things to talk about.

Do we talk about the weather?
Do I ask "where are you from?"

Even if I use Japanese, it is difficult to find the topics. My problem is not only my English is not good but also I have no idea to talk about. If I talk about myself, it sounds selfish. I guess asking something about a person is better.
But what can I ask about him/her?

What do you do?
Where do you live?

Usually, what do you talk about when you make small talk?
Do you have recommended topics or strategy?

I always have to guess to understand what people are talking about

I always have to guess to understand what people are talking about because I can't hear everything. I can hear only a few words and always guess what he/she is talking about. Especially, talking with people whom I don't know is one of the most difficult situations for me.I think there are two reasons for this.

One is I don't know his/her way of thinking. For instance, I have a friend who is Korean. His English is not good (like me) but I know his way of thinking. So I can guess what he wants to talk about. Sometimes, even though he said just one word, I could understand him and vice versa.

Another is they don't seem to care I'm not good at English. I would say they can recognize my mother tongue isn't English but their talking speed doesn't change at all. I'm not sure, but I guess almost all my acquaintances think about me, so they speak a little slower and use easier English and that's why I can guess easier than unknown people.

I had an episode. When I went to English school, some of my class mates said something in class. All of my classmates could understand what he wanted to say but my teacher couldn't. My hypothesis is like this. We always use broken English and guess something. And our guess abilities are better than my teacher even if we talk using English. Even though I could hear just one word, some times I can guess what my friends talk about.

Actually, I don't want to guess. I really want to hear more exactly because I often misunderstand, as my guess is not correct... I can hear only a few words and it's difficult to guess.

Tragic episode

Usually I don't bring any bags to go outside if I don't have to bring many things. So I always put my wallet, cellphone and keys into my pockets and go outside. This is a very good way for me because I don't very often forget to bring my wallet and cellphone.

A few months ago, I broke my cellphone because of my this habit. When I walked through a class room, I hit my leg on a desk. There is always my cellphone in my pocket so naturally it got broken. If the screen faced my leg side, I could have avoided breaking my cellphone, but it didn't. Fortunately, only the outside screen cracked and my cellphone still works. After that has happened, I will always put my cellphone so that the main screen faces my leg.

I would say that nowadays there are many big screen cellphones and many men carry it like me. I mean, I guess many people break their cellphones because of their habits. I just don't want to think that I am the only person who is a jackass.

Do you have a episode like mine?

I eat Japanese foods everyday

I eat Japanese foods everyday.
Near my house, there are several Japanese supermakets and I can buy many kinds of Japanese foods there. Every week I go to there and buy natto, tofu, yakisoba and so on, so I can eat Japanese foods everyday.

But sometimes I think about myself and that my behavior is weird because I am living in a foreign country. There is the common saying that says "do in Rome as the Romans do". I totally don't do that. If I were younger like a high school student, I could eat American food every day life, but I can't. I'm not sure if it is because of my age or my nature.

Also, I have another reason for this. I don't know how to make American food. Everytime I go to an American grocery store, I can't imagine what I can cook because the selection of goods is totally different from Japanese stores. Nowadays I think I should find some good American food to cook!

I have some excuse for this. Many people want to do it and that's why there are many Asian or Japanese supermarkets in this area. I'm not the only one like this.

I'm lucky I can go to Japanese store here. I'm curious what kinds of foods people who live in other countries eat? Do they eat local foods or their own country's foods?

I'm curious about how women ask for things.

I'm not sure if every woman does this. I'm curious about the behavior of women. They ask me somethig even if they have an answer already.

Yesterday I went to my friend's house to celebrate his birthday. His wife wanted to make something special and that's why I went to their house a little bit earlier and his wife and I went to some shop when my friend went out. She wanted to buy several balloons and ornaments for him to decorate their house. When we chose balloons, she asked me which was better to choose. Actually, I had no idea what she wanted to do and I don't have any good sense of how to decorate a room. So I suggested to her some balloons but she didn't accept any my suggestions. I would say she already had some idea of how to decorate their room and she didn't need my opinion but she asked me. At that time, although I didn't say anything, I wanted to say "then you shouldn't ask me about that!!"

I have several similar experiences and I'm just curious why they asked me even if they already had their answer, when they chose something. Do they want to check their choice which will be better?

Actually, I want to be a good adviser and I want them to say "you think so?" But almost all cases my choice is rejected and I feel empty.... My opinion is not necessary for their choice.

By the way, my friend really grateful about the balloons(everything was her choice) and his wife looked very happy when she saw him. I enjoyed his birthday party!!

Do I need the Internet for my English?

I 'm addicted to the Internet.
I always use the Internet for everything which I want to know. When I want to go to new shop, I get some information and map using the Internet in advance.

Although the Internet is very usefull and improves my standard of living, I have some doubt. Because it is so convenient, I can see lots of Japanese everyday. When I want to know something, I feel compelled to use Japanese first because it is easy to understand... I don't want to deny everything, but sometime I feel the Internet is double-edged. There are a lot of Japanese in my environment even if I live in the U.S. Sometime I think that if I had come here 15 years ago, I would have only been able to read japanese in a dictionary and books. I know it is depends on me but I am weak willed.

Althogh I try to use English version software in these days.....

Think about Phelps

Michael Phelps has recently become the flavor of the week.

Apparently, someone took a picture of him smoking weed. Marijuana is prohibited by not only U.S. law, but also by the WADA(World Anti-Doping Agency). But I felt that it was not that big of an issue in the U.S. Going by the few articles I've read, Phelps isn't facing much in the way of condemnation. He merely lost his sponsorship deal with Kellogg. If he were Kitagima, a Japanese gold medalist, his career would be over. He would be black listed in Japanese society. I think American culture and Japanese culture are totally different in this regard. Even though inhaling weed is illegal, it is a common occurrence in the U.S. I've seen on more than one occasion people here who smoke weed. Public judgment is different between countries and each has its own sliding measurement of what's right and what's wrong.

I found a funny sentence about Phelps in New York Times. It was the last line in an article, and it read "The chlorine is good for you." Chlorine is a chemical that is added to pool water. I think the writer just wanted to tell him to practice a lot to win more gold medals.

Personally, I don't care if he smokes weed. But it is breaking the law. I junt want to say it's better not to make a problem because he is a great star in the world. It is not good for his kid funs and problems are media's cup of tea.

Spring is around the corner

Reacetlly I would say that spring is aroud the corner even though today it is still the beginning of February. I can see some "Sakura" on the street. Also I feel something like the smell of spring. It means I sneeze a lot and my nose is running. Also my eyes are a little bit itchy. Yeah, I have a hay fever.

6 years ago I went to a hospital and a doctor told me I tested positive for hay fever. Actually I thought I never had hay fever but it was silly thinking. My blood test showed I have allergies to cedar and cypress pollen. When I was in Tokyo, my case was not only because of pollen but also air pollution. So if I move another place, my nose is better than when I lived in Tokyo because I guess Tokyo's air is one of the worst in the world. In fact, when I lived in Fukuoka, I was good and I didn't sneeze as much. Also, here in the bay area, it is not countryside but better than Tokyo I guess.

Anyway, I sneeze a lot and my "hay fever season" is coming even if now it is still only February. I don't know if this is the bay area's typical climate or if it was a mild winter. I should ask someone about that.

Sakura is already blooming!!

I joined 5k fun run.

Last Sunday, I joined 5k fun run in San Francisco. In this event, there were about 10000 people who joined. I joined with some of my friends. We went to San Francisco before 6 am because we expected that many people would want to go San Francisco and there were some traffic jam. But it was not as we have expected. When we arraived, on parking lot which was near start line, there were no cars! We arrived there too early!! We ate breakfast in the car and went to the start line. As expected, there were a few people in there. At that time, it was 7 am and it was so cold(May be temperature was under 5 Degree Celcius or 41 Degree Fahrenheit). But some people wore just tank top and I couldn't believe them. What's going on!? Are you kidding me!?

Any way, I ran 5k meters and I reaally enjoyed it.
Though I didn't prepare for it, I don't know why but I don't have muscle soreness.

I eat too much!!

Yesterday, I noticed that my body's changing it is my abdomen. I take a shower everyday but I didn't notice it. I don't know why but I haven't been looking my body well enough. Because usually I don't measure my weight, I didn't think I was gaining more weight. Then, I tried to figue out what my problem was. Nowadays, I try to cook myself and it is one of the reasons I guess because I can cook only one person's meal. I don't want to leave something and it means I sould eat everything. In addition, I'm not good at calculating how much is enough for one person. Also, many times I spoil many vegetables and I don't want that. So I cook too much and I don't want to leave anything. It means I eat everything. So, I gained some weight and I am almost fat........

I have to consider this as a problem. I need an excercise routine.I like to eat but, No pain No gain.....
